IT'S CALLED FASHION, DARLING


I still can‘t believe how the time flies: I‘m done with my first year of uni and I‘ve done my first-ever internship at a fashion magazine. I feel like I‘ve learned so much in these last months, not only about the fashion industry and journalism but mainly about myself. Most people tend to say that your first year of uni is the easiest. And while on an academic level, it most certainly is the easiest, I feel like it‘s probably the year where you learn the most in terms of life experience. Obviously I can‘t talk for everybody, but for me personally, it was a year full of experiences and „first times“. I‘ve lived alone (and abroad) for the first time which led me to travel more than ever in order to see my family. As previously already said, I‘ve had my first internship in the fashion industry. I‘ve developed my writing skills more than I ever thought possible. I met incredible people. I‘ve pushed my limits more, experimented more and even won more confidence in myself and my skills. Basically, I‘ve grown up.


I guess by now everybody on this planet and their mums have seen „The Devil Wears Prada“. For most people, that film is the only insight into the fashion industry so that’s what they are basing their opinion on. I‘ve been there myself.
When I first started uni in September, one of my tutors said that we shouldn‘t think that our life is really going to be like the movie. And, after having successfully passed my first year of uni and having absolved my first internship, I can only agree: the life of a fashion intern is, by far, not as glamorous. Do you have to run around to pick up or return samples? Definitely. Does it get stressful? Obviously. Do you get pushed to your limits? Daily. But I didn't look as good as Anne Hathaway when running around with suitcases that were close to my own weight. On the contrary, I've never looked more disgusting and funny (for outstanding people) in my entire life, which is a bold claim considering what an awkward human being I am.


Is it worth it? Depends on your work ethic. If you‘re searching for a 9-5 job that‘s nicely paid, then you should probably think about changing your career path. Fashion is similar to the blogging community in a way: you get what you give. The chances that you‘ll actually „make it“ in the industry are little. You‘ll shed a lot of sweat, tears and nerves. You’ll carry clothes around that are most certainly worth more than your life. If fashion is not your life and you're not ready to dedicate your whole life to it, you‘ll probably never get past flicking through the beautiful pages of monthly glossies. If you‘re hard-working and ready to "live and breathe fashion" (as one of my friends keeps on calling it), it‘s a very rewarding industry though. You‘ll be part of incredible shoots and projects, meet insanely talented and nice people, and have a great time - I promise.


Personally, I've never been a person that searched for the easy paths (I'm studying Fashion Journalism - can you tell?) I like to think of myself as quite driven, ambitious and thorough to a mostly unhealthy point, but hey, I'm still here, I do what I love and I'm happy so I'm probably doing something right.

Even though I knew that I wanted to be part of this industry since the age of 10, I didn't really talk about it much in the beginning. On the one side because let's be honest, what normal kid knows what they want to do at the age of 10 and really sticks to it? ... You get my point. On the other side, I kept it to myself because sadly enough fashion still is often considered as a triviality and not a job. Well, look up your statistics, honey: the fashion industry in the UK makes more money in a year than the car industry, which funnily enough people do take seriously - do we even have to get further into it? Most people didn't even realise that there were courses based on fashion in uni when I started to tell them. And yeah, it's not a classical uni for sure- I don't have exams, I'm not one of 100 in my classroom and my tutors actually know my name. But honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way! I love my uni, I fall more and more in love with fashion and the idea to be part of this incredible, ever-evolving industry, and I feel like for the first time ever, I am free to work for something that I'm passionate about.


Seeing the results after the first year makes me excited to see what is yet to come, and have proven me at the same time that there is no such thing as having unrealistic goals. I've been told wayyy to often that I'll never make it, that I'm not even going to get into uni. Yet here we are! I'm a firm believer that you're biggest and only acceptable obstacle is yourself so don't let anybody stand in the way of your dreams, no matter if it's in the fashion industry or anything else. If you want it, go for it. Be ready to work and make it the biggest priority of your life. If you're okay with it, then go for it and chances are you'll eventually get to realise yourself.

STRIPED SHIRT AND CROPPED JEANS



Before the heatwave hit the UK, I shot one of my current favourite outfits and thought I might still share it now since we all know how quickly the weather changes around here. So who knows? You might need some inspiration for cooler days in a few weeks time again.



One of my favourite stores to look for jeans is definitely Topshop. I love the fit and the variety that they offer, even though their jeans are quite high-priced (considering it's a highstreet brand). I've got these jeans last automn and have never looked back. I usually don't go for flared-out versions, simply because I feel like they aren't as flattering on me, but I fell way too hard for these to care about all that. Elsewise, it's literally just a white T-Shirt, a pair of Adidas loafers and a denim jacket layered under a baseball jacket.

8 TIPS ON HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED


I think we all know those moments where you just want to lie in bed all day long and do nothing. We all have them no matter what we're studying, where we are working or what we are doing in our life. It's human to be lazy from time to time. The only problem with it is that laziness won't bring you anywhere, so sometimes you just have to "suck it up" as some would call it, get out of bed and get your sh*t done. I figured it would be a good idea to give you some tips that help me stay motivated - maybe, they'll help you, too!

  • Get out of bed early
I know... This is by far the hardest one for me, too, but at the same time, it's probably the most effective one as well. As much as I love to sleep until midday, fact is I lose half a day to be productive and get stuff done, which ends up in me stressing out about not having enough time to get everything done or in staying up until late at night because I feel like I need to finish everything I planned for that day. Since I started getting up early, I feel a lot less stressed out and (that's a no-brainer) I get more stuff done in a day which helps me to stay motivated to keep up this routine.
  • Make a to-do list
I'm not talking about the impossible 100-bullet-points-to-do-lists. Just write down 5 things that you really need to get done during that day and try to stick to that list. There's a weird feeling of satisfaction in crossing out the points that you've completed which really helps me to stay motivated to being productive for the rest of the day as well.
  • Keep up a certain day structure
Every day is different - you have different stuff to do, different people to see, different meetings to attend, and I completely get that. But keeping up a few simple habits that you follow every single day, such as going to the gym at one time or having breakfast/lunch/dinner at another time, is going to help you keep up with your schedule.

  • Make healthy choices
I've already talked about the sleeping schedule. Another, quite obvious example of making healthy choices would be for example to eat as healthy as you can. I don't talk about completely cutting out every food that you love (go get that McDonald's, girl!), but just try to keep your meals on the lighter side during the day to avoid feeling sleepy and lazy. Also, try to drink as much water as you can. I agree that coffee and Redbull can be saviours in case of fatigue, but I find that if I drink enough water, I get less tired throughout the day, especially when it comes to that little afternoon-sleepy-moment.
  • Remember why you're doing it
As I previously said, it's human to get lazy and caught-up in a routine sometimes. Even though I love my studies and am really happy with the way things are looking right now for me, it's probably one of the most stressful times I've had in a very long time. In times like these, it's easy to lose motivation, but I believe that reminding yourself ever so often why you started doing what you're doing and keeping your eyes on the end goal helps a lot.

  • Keep your working place tidy
I also tend to feel very low and unmotivated whenever my desk looks like a hot mess because let's be honest: who wants to write an essay in between empty bottles, books that you don't need, pens that nobody knows where they come from and other unnecessary stuff? So try to keep your working place tidy and neat in order for things not to look as bad anymore.
  • Allow yourself to have breaks and some me-time
I don't know about you but if I don't have enough me-time (which is literally me eating a bunch of food without even being hungry at all, while watching Netflix or YouTube, or play Sims), I get a very grumpy and unpleasant human being, and I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one. So allow yourself to have reasonable breaks in between work, and even take some time off every week to simply do nothing.
  • Know when you're the most productive and make the most out of it
Even though I'm everything but a morning person, I figured out that mornings are actually the time that I function best at (if I had enough sleep and I manage to get up that is). For me, this tip goes hand in hand with the first one and is probably the main reason why I try to get up early in the morning. I personally know that after lunch, I tend to feel more laid-back and even lazy, so I usually try to get done as much as I can beforehand.

LOSS

Do you know that feeling when your life is just falling apart and everything you can do is stand there and watch? I would consider myself a being of habit, as most of us probably are. I love to have everything planned out and organised. I like to have security and feel in control over what's happening. And up until now, I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

The only problem is when things happen that I can't control. And those things happened quite a lot recently. Life is sometimes a real bitch. It hits you the hardest when you're already struggling and unexpectedly changes course when you feel like everything is finally falling into place.

One of those major changes in life that nobody can really control and little to nobody can handle is losing people. I always try to believe that you meet people for a reason and that not everybody is meant to stay in your life. So when people leave, I know that it's alright and it has to happen this way. You learn from it and, no matter how hard it seems at the time, you have to move on. Usually, it's for the best. You deserve to be around people who want to be there for you and want to be part of your life, so everybody who's not ready to commit to that, probably shouldn't be there. It sounds really sad, but life goes on and eventually, you'll get over it and move on to better things.

The other scenario is losing people to death which is, by far, worse. It's the kind of loss you'll have to live with forever. There's rarely a presentiment to that so when it hits you, it'll hit you hard. I've considered myself quite lucky to rarely have had to deal with this sort of things. Up until this year where it happened way too often. And people keep on saying that it'll get easier over time and that "that's just part of life", but you know what, it's f*cking hard and hearing this isn't making it any better. It doesn't get easier over time. It stays with you forever. And every time something similar happens, everything keeps on flashing back. It's the kind of thing you never forget. And it's one of the things everybody has to go through alone. Of course, you can (and should) talk to people about it and grieve, but at the end of the day, you'll lie alone in your bed thinking and rethinking about all the moments you shared with that person. You wake up and all the memories are accompanying you through your everyday life, as vivid as ever. And it doesn't go away. The only thing that changes is that at one point, you continue to live with it. The pain becomes part of your daily life to a point where you don't even realise it's there anymore. But it'll stick around forever.

You know what is the worst thing about it? There's no real escape. No matter how little you want to hear all those "comforting" phrases, people are right when they say that death is a natural part of our life. And at some point, we'll all have to deal with it.

The only thing you can really do is try to get the maximum out of the present. Spend time with your family and all your beloved ones. As much as you can, because you never know what can happen. You never know when it's going to be too late. And believe me when I say, there's no worse feeling than regret when it happens. I speak out of experience.

HAPPINESS


Happiness. If you think about it, isn't happiness actually the end goal of every human being? Don't we all strive to be happy and satisfied with our life and ourselves?

Obviously, the term means something different to everybody. Somebody might consider a good marriage with children the supreme happiness while others strive for a successful career. But no matter what you perceive to be your definition of happiness, it is what we all strive towards, am I right?

Personally, I would love to live a life where I would have time for a bit of everything that enriches me as a human being. Right now, my priority is uni and my internship obviously - for the rest, who knows what the future really holds? I think that happiness is a choice as well. I'm not saying that you can control everything, but one thing that you have influence on is definitely how you cope and react to different things that might even be pretty shitty, but you know, that's life. I don't mean to sound super stereotypical, but we all go through our ups and downs, and we need both sides in order to grow, learn and know how to react appropriately.


I know that I'm being really repetitive, but if somebody would've told me even a year ago what my life would look like now, I would've laughed at them and dismissed them as being unrealistic dreamers. And yet here we are!

If I learned something over the past year, it's definitely that you can make things happen and you have more choices than you realise you do. Nobody is going to offer you anything in life unless you ask for it and work to get it. You and only you are responsible for your own success and, in the long run, your own happiness. If you're unhappy with a particular aspect of your life, try to think of ways to turn things around to the better and I'm pretty sure that in most cases you'll manage to come up with a plan if you really want to.


Blaming other people and shifting responsibilities on others is pretty easy and let's be honest, we probably do it all from time to time. But at the end of the day, your main responsibility in life is to be happy and live a life you're happy with. And at the end of the day, you're the only person that can make things happen for yourself. So if you really want it, well then go for it and stop coming up with excuses why it shouldn't work out. Just give it a shot. The worst thing that can happen is that nothing changes. But after all, if you don't even try, nothing will ever change anyway. A good friend of mine always used to say "If you ask, you might get a no - if you don't ask, you already got a no." Can't we all relate to that?

POWER DRESSING





Okay, let's go back all the way to the 80s where one of the main fashion trends was power dressing. The original concept was what you would call nowadays "dress to impress". People didn't dress according to their actual social position or working place, but they dressed the way they wanted to be perceived, aka in suits that made them feel like they could take over the world. If you're interested in this whole idea of power dressing, I can only recommend watching the 1988-film Working Girl with Melanie Griffith in one of the main roles.

I guess part of this whole power dressing idea has carried on to nowadays. The suit has become an office staple. Being a 21-year-old Fashion Journalism student, I rarely (basically never) get those moments where I am obliged to wear a suit. Nonetheless, I feel like no matter what age you are and profession you have, you should have a good-fitted suit in your wardrobe for those moments where you might need that extra confidence boost or have to look a bit more professional and serious than usual. 





I built this outfit around my all-time favourite royal blue suit by Armani Jeans. I tried to dress it down a bit by pairing it with a baby pink, slogan T-Shirt from New Look that says 'Ch√©rie' on the front. Finally, I went with a pair of black Spaziomoda heels and paired a silver clutch by Karen Millen to pick up on the slightly silver, reflective band on the shoes.

APRIL FAVOURITES

It's that time of the month again where your feed is spammed with favourites blog posts, videos and everything in between. Well, I'm not going to spare you either so without further ado, let's get into all things beauty that I turned out to be obsessed with in April!


I think it comes as no news that Maybelline is one of the leading high street brands that people go to, especially when it comes to mascara. Lately, I've rediscovered my love for the smokey version of the Colossal Volume Express Mascara. I feel like it's a perfect all-rounder for people who need some help with volume and length, yet don't want to compromise on the colour pigmentation either. 


I've been more into lipsticks these last couple of months but as the temperatures rise, I feel more drawn to lipglosses again. I know that the Essence Stay With Me lipgloss (in 02 My Favourite Milkshake) has been around for quite some time now, but I still feel like it's worth the hype, especially for the price point.


As one of my main goals for this year was to use less makeup, I've tried to reach more for BB creams than full coverage foundations. I still love my ALEX Royal BB Cream but with a price point of over 30 Euros, I felt kind of forced to search for more affordable options. Aka, I went back to an old favourite of mine: L'Oreal Glam Nude BB Cream (in Light to Medium). It obviously won't cover all your imperfections but I love the natural finish of it on a day-to-day basis.


I guess by this picture alone you can already tell how much I've loved the Diadermine Expert Fondamental Night Cream. It leaves my skin moisturised and plumped-up without making me break out (huge bonus point for that!)


For the days I needed some more coverage, I've always reached for the Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation (in Nr.55). It promises to last for 16h - I can't really confirm that as I try to never leave my foundation on for that long. What I can say though is that it covers every imperfection without looking cakey, drying out my skin or feeling heavy on the face.


Last but definitely not least, I've been obsessed with the Scandal perfume by Jean Paul Gaultier. So much that I managed to use it up within a few months. It lasts forever on my skin and I feel like it's one of those all-rounder scents that you can wear day and night and it always matches the situation as well as your mood.
